Saxifraga grisebachii<\/em> isn\u2019t just your average greenery. It\u2019s a chasmophyte \u2013 an impressive term that simply means she loves living in rock crevices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Origin:<\/strong> She\u2019s a Balkan local. You\u2019ll find her in Greece (mainly on Mount Olympus, the Pindus range, and the northern mountains), Albania, and Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personality:<\/strong> She\u2019s tough as nails. The cold doesn\u2019t bother her, neither does the wind, nor the fact that she literally lives on a rock. 💪<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to spot her (The “Look”):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you spot her on a hike, you\u2019ll immediately see she\u2019s got\u2026 taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rosette:<\/strong> Her leaves form a perfect, geometric rosette that looks like a silver star. They have a glaucous (grey-green) hue because they are covered in calcium secreted by the plant itself \u2013 it\u2019s like she\u2019s wearing powdered sunscreen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “Flaming” Stem:<\/strong> In the spring, a deep red, velvety stem rises from the center of the rosette, looking like a tiny tower or\u2026 an exotic asparagus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Flowers:<\/strong> At the tip of this stem, small purple flowers appear, protected by hairy bracts (leaves that look like scales).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saxifraga isn\u2019t high maintenance at all. If she were a person, she\u2019d be that type who goes camping on snowy Mount Olympus with nothing but a water flask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light:<\/strong> She loves the sun, but she also needs her “chill” time. In the wild, she picks spots facing east or north to avoid getting scorched at noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water:<\/strong> She hates mud. She wants the water to clear out fast (excellent drainage). If her roots sit in soggy soil, she\u2019ll start “complaining” and rot faster than you can say her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Substrate:<\/strong> She\u2019s all about rocks, gravel, and a bit of limestone soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
